Nikki's Story |

“Mentoring enabled me to build my confidence, and now I’m able to go out and mix with other people in the community; and able to cope – doing things that I was not able to do before, such as grocery shopping.” Nikki is very enthusiastic about what mentoring has done for her and would thoroughly recommend mentoring for other people. She relates: “I wanted someone I could visit with, have coffee with and someone to help me with grocery shopping. I also hoped to have someone older who could be more like a grandma. My mentor, Beverley, and I have built a great friendship and used to visit each other often (not only for mentoring purposes) and I was also able to offer her my support. Beverley was good with my daughter and they regarded each other as granddaughter / grandmother. I liked Beverley because she helped me with writing my shopping list and could take me grocery shopping in her car, as I could not drive due to my health issues. It was good to have outside help; someone to give advice and an overview of how things are done without having arguments. I felt Beverley was able to do this better than a family member could do it.”When asked if there were any hard times in mentoring that she worked through, Nikki replied, “During my mentoring process, my grandmother passed away, and Beverley was so supportive. She would ring me just to check on how things were going and encouraged me through my grief process. It was so good to have someone like a grandma (Bev) when I had just lost one.” Although the official mentoring relationship has been closed, Nikki and Beverley have continued to keep in touch. |
