Fresh Perspective mentors are volunteers who work under supervision out of various Churches throughout New Zealand. They have all completed an application process, including providing references, police checks and 16 hours of training.

Mentoring is about being supportive to those who have asked for help. It is about taking time to listen, to encourage, to help identify solutions or ways through difficulties, and to walk with them for a while.

Mentoring with Fresh Perspective is about intentionally supporting a person while they grapple with some of life’s challenges, or learn new skills: assisting them to realise their desires for themselves by helping them put goals into manageable steps that will build an experience of small accumulative successes.

Everyone needs someone to believe in them. A key concept in mentoring is that self esteem is not entirely self generated, but comes from the way a person perceives themselves from how others treat them. If a person is treated as capable, they will think of themselves as capable. Mentors let the people they are alongside know that they are both valued and valuable.

Mentors are not social workers or trained counsellors. They are great motivators, advisors and advocates for those who they come alongside.
