At the time I was matched with my mentor I had no idea of the lifeline it was to be. Only now as I look back and reflect on the experience do I see it! It’s like I was stuck high on a mountain and amidst the ‘noise’ of my difficult situation I didn’t see the helicopter dropping the survival pack to me.
My mentor arrived at about the same time a number of other community organisations and agencies came around to support me in parenting my son. All of these organisations, along with Fresh Perspective, have made a huge difference in my daily life. What was special about my mentor was she was there for me personally as well as being someone who could pray for me. I now see my mentor as the ‘big sister’ I’ve needed for years. The match was perfect – bunches of thanks to those responsible.
The fruit of connecting with another soul has definitely been a stepping stone in getting me back out in the community meeting people. Finally, I have come out of the cave that I have been hiding in for a number of years and can see life through a different set of glasses.
I would definitely recommend Fresh Perspective mentoring to others. It certainly met my expectations and nearly all of my needs. My mentor was very wise (in a quiet kind of way) and listened to my blabbering patiently and gave suggestions along the way. Now I am grateful to be at the place of not needing a lifeline any more but my mentor and I will definitely keep in touch on an informal basis - as good friends/sisters do!
